African Americans and the Media
The more I move through the media and tech communities, the more I’m noticing the lack of browness at the conferences I’m attending, meetings I’m sitting in on and the rooms I’m presenting in.  Presumably this is one of the reasons I’m there and I’ve been making it a point to recommend as many qualified people of color for positions as possible. Same thing with women and my queer, trans and questioning folks. The internets is a pretty multifaceted, multicultural place and practitioners, conference attendees and presenters should reflect that a lot more than they are at the moment. (more…)

Racebending explained in 60 seconds.

There’s been a lot of back and forth about Avatar over the last few weeks but a large group of Asian activists have been beefing about it since the film was announced, and with good reason. Asian based cartoon, but where are the Asian faces in the movie?C’mon big budget mega movie studios, get with the program. It’s 2010. It’s okay to show people of color in leading roles. All of us. Really, we don’t bite and we promise not to pee on your floor.

Oscar Grant and Oakland Local

Oscar Grant Memorial this Friday

Tomorrow night marks the 1 year anniversary of the murder of Oscar Grant by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle and emotions in Oakland are running high. From renewed anger over police brutality, to BART announcing it will increase the number of police on call for the night.  It’s a complicated issue with a lot of unanswered questions. But no matter where you stand on the fallout after of the death, hopefully you’re moved by the fact that a life was lost.  Politics, opinions and ideologies aside, a young man died. Let’s not lose site of that.

"Freeway" Ricky Ross Interview

Former LA drug kingpin Ricky Ross is back on the streets and the Block Report’s JR Valrey has the scoop with the 1st interview I’ve seen since his release after serving 13 years of a life sentence.

This is one of those interviews you’re going to have a hard time finding in major media outlets and is an example of exactly why, in the age of community management, citizen journalists and new media, there’s still a need for frontline on the ground reporting and investigations.

Freeway Ricky Ross” is well known in hip hop circles and his alleged relationships have fueled government watchdogs, activists and conspiracy theorists for the last decade and a half. During his heyday Ross claimed to make upwards of $2-3 million a day moving keys of coke through the Los Angeles area. With a regular crew of at least 40 employees and alleged connections that stretched deep into the US govt., it was Ross’, baller status, along with the mythos of New York’s Nicky Barnes and Frank Lucas, that fueled the unfortunate drug dealer super personas of most mainstream rappers.
